A guy I know who lives in Chicago – though he travels a lot to Los Angeles from Chicago, is a tattoo fiend. He’s literally covered with them, and yes, I know what the word ‘literally’ means. I don’t know how he keeps getting new tattoos, because I have no idea where on his body is left that has some real estate for new ink. It’s insane. Now I guess I haven’t seen everywhere, if you catch my drift, but every bit of exposed skin is covered, and every time we hang out he’s got another new one. He said he usually goes to the same shop near his house, but also goes to new shops when he’s in new towns and also has dabble in the art of self-tattoo. That was what caught my intrigue. He said he bought a tattoo gun and began practicing to see if he could actually do it.
He said the hardest part was committing to putting the needles, that he got in the tattoo kits, to his skin the first time, but once he did it, it became almost addictive. I mean, he is clearly already addicted to tattooing, but I can see how it might be appealing in a controlled self-mutilation kind of way. It’s pretty cool. His work is really great.
